The Oldest coffee shop in Amsterdam: The Bulldog Coffeeshop

The Bulldog Coffeeshop in Amsterdam

The Bulldog Coffeeshop is the best known coffee shop in the whole of Amsterdam. Located in the basement of a building, this coffeeshop is one of the chief attractions of Leidseplein. The place is usually visited by large group of tourists and if you are lucky you can even spot a celebrity within the walls.

This old building housed the Amsterdam police station. Although it has been renovated in recent times, it still resembles a police station. You can browse through a collection of criminal and police artefacts and you should spend a few minutes in the jail cells to have a unique and unforgettable experience. It is basically a cannabis coffee shop in the Red-light district of Amsterdam.

Bulldog Coffeeshop Menu

This is the oldest coffee shop in Amsterdam where you get coffee, drinks, cakes and a good range of hash/weed to choose from. The atmosphere is very lively but visitors do complain about the impersonal attitude of the staff. They even charge 1 EUR to use the toilet even if you are a paying customer! The pints or the 500ml beers that are served here are well below the 500ml line and this may really put off some of the tourists. This is one of the few places where you can smoke herbal tobacco although some may feel that it tastes dry and awful. If you are familiar with hash/weed then you can pick your usual stuff without experimenting much.

Although the place has some serious drawbacks, it is still worth a visit considering the kind of history attached to this place. In fact, there are only a handful of people who have come to Amsterdam and not visited the Bulldog Coffeeshop. The place opens at 9:00 in the morning and closes down at 01:00 (next day). The menu prices are a bit high but the experience of having a drink or smoke here is worth every penny that you will spend at this place.
